Cyborgs we heard - Neil Harbisson, Meow-Ludo-...,Kevin Warwick, Jesse Sullivan.
Let us now listen to the story of the first female cyborg...
She was crying while peeling banana one handed. She had no other choice. She was using her legs instead of her another hand, for she had no other hand. She had lost her left hand several months ago in a motor cycle accident. She lived in Maryland, USA. She was in the army. She didn't lose her hand there. That had shaken her though. But now she can not only peel a banana but can cook, lift her laundry bucket, fold clothes and many other things. Thanks to the bionic arm she got. We have already heard about some cyborgs who have got bionic arms already. She was the fourth person overall and first female to get a bionic arm. Therefore, we can call her "First female cyborg" A recent upgrade to her bionic arm helps her to feel things with her hand. Her name is Claudia Mitchell

Nigel Ackland ... He was a metal smelter. He met with an accident at his work place. His right hand was crushed in an industrial mixer. His hand was so damaged that he was forced to get amputated after six months. A year later,he was filled with raging anger with the way people treated him. He admitted that he was in the dark place mentally. He hated the way people looked at him; with pity, fear or disgust. His life got a turn on the day he received a call from RSL Steepers and he was asked whether he was interested to try out their bebionic arm. He agreed without having a second thought as he was so fixated on doing something to change the way of his life. He got advanced bionic arm added to his right hand. It is even called "Terminator arm" . He can independently move his five fingers. This allows him to grip any substance easily. These are the features of Bebionic arm as released by RSL Steeper
  • Individual Motors in each finger allow you to move the hand and grip in a natural, coordinated way. The motors are positioned to optimize weight distribution – making the hand feel lighter and more comfortable.
  • Powerful microprocessors continuously monitor the position of each finger, giving you precise, reliable control over hand movements.
  • 14 Selectable grip patterns and hand positions enable you to perform a huge number of everyday activities with ease.
  • Proportional Speed Control gives you precision control over delicate tasks, so you can pick up an egg or hold a polystyrene cup as easily as crushing an empty can.
  • Bebalance software and wireless technology located within the bebionic3 myoelectric hand makes it easy to customize the functions to suit your preferences and lifestyle.
  • Selectable thumb positions and a built-in sensor enable you to complete more tasks than ever before.
  • Auto grip means no more accidents, as bebionic3 automatically senses when a gripped item is slipping and adjusts the grip to secure it.
  • Foldaway fingers provide natural looking movement, and flex when you brush past people or bump into objects.
  • Durable construction and advanced materials makes bebionic3 strong enough to handle up to 45kg – so you can confidently use the hand to carry heavy objects, and push yourself up from a seated position.
  • Innovative palm design protects bebionic3 from impact damage, and makes the hand quieter than ever.
  • Soft finger pads and a wide thumb profile maximizes the surface area, and enhances grip.

Let us now know about the first experimentation of creating Cyborgs.
In 1997 Vietnamese war, a person named Johnny Ray suffered a stroke. He lost complete sensation over his body and was like a living dead. A scientist and a physician named Philip Kennedy wanted to experiment about the concept of creating Cyborgs. He asked Ray whether he wanted to be a test subject. With the desire of becoming normal, Ray agreed to Kennedy's experimentation. Kennedy implanted a device he made, called as "Neurotrophic electrode" into his brain. The device was able to stimulate the nervous system of Ray. Kennedy was successful in making some body parts of Johnny ray to move. In this way, Ray actually became the world's first human cyborg, but he didn't get the credit because though the surgery was successful, Ray died in 2002.

Some more points on Cyborgs will be awaiting the readers next week....
